In the 1st century BC, Ephesus was the second-largest city in the world after Rome. It had a population of over 250,000 in the Roman Empire. Ephesus, which was entirely built with marble from start to finish, is also a port city. The reason people began settling in these lands between 6000 and 8000 BC is because it had a coastline along the Aegean Sea, meaning it was a port city. Its development as a center of maritime trade became the beginning of its fame, which continued for centuries.
